Deferment Eligibility
The below information is provided as a courtesy to introduce you to your options for deferment and not does not represent specific guidelines that may be required. For specific information and qualifications please contact a Student Aid Advisor at (800) 964-0642 option 2.
Deferment Types:
The most common form of deferment as students take out new loans they directly enter into in school deferment. You must be enrolled in a program at a school that is allowed to receive federal aid or operated by the federal government at least half time.
Medical interns and residents are not allowed In School deferment unless you are a dental intern or enrolled in a Ph. D. program.
Required form SCH
The program allows for any length of time you are engaged in full time fellowship studies and end the date you withdraw or complete your studies. You must provide a letter from an authorized official of your fellowship program that states the anticipated completion date and certifies that:
- You hold a bachelor degree.
- Your studies will be full time in an area you've demonstrated an interest or ability for and that you were recommended to by a higher learning institute.
The program must allow for:
- Financial support to allow full time study for at least 6 months.
- Written statement of objectives of applicant before financial support was awarded.
- Periodic reports, projects or other evidence of progress.
- Accept studies at a foreign school for completion of fellowship program.
Required Form GRAD
Available for the length of time you are actively participating in Rehabilitation Training. A from form the agency conducting the training must be provided certifying you are participating in the program, the program is approved by a state agency or the Dept. of Veterans Affairs and meets the needs of a written plan as outlined.
Required Form REHAB
A.K.A. targeted teacher deferment to teachers serving in elementary or secondary education in an identified teacher shortage area for a maximum of 3 years, even if the area no longer is listed as a targeted teacher shortage area after your deferment begins. Deferment must be renewed each school year. Contact your lender for specific details.

Internship/Residency Training: (back to top)
Loans before July 1, 1993
Allowed only for the time you are in an internship/residency program and for a maximum of two years. It is intended to cover programs that require Internship/Residency for professional recognition or service in the medical field that leads to a degree or certificate. To obtain deferment A letter is required from an authorized official stating:
- Supervised program requiring a bachelor degree before entering.
- You are accepted into the program.
- Anticipated dates program will begin and be completed by.
Additional forms/documentation may be required depending on the type of program.

Temporary Total Disability: (back to top)
Loans made before July 1, 1993
Applies when either you are temporarily totally disabled or cannot work as you are caring for a dependant or spouse who is temporarily totally disabled. Although up to three (3) years are allowed for this deferment program, deferment must be renewed every 6 months with a letter from your physician.

Loans made before July 1, 1993
PLUS loans made before August 18, 1983
Intended to cover members of the US Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force or Cost Guard who are called into active duty. Members of the Reserves or National Guard must be on a full time active duty status for at least one (1) year to qualify. The program is limited to 3 years and requires documentation from either your commanding or personnel officer certifying the active duty status and expected end date or a copy of your official orders and military ID card.
Additional provisions may be made available to loans originated after 1993. Contact your lender for specific details.

Loans made before July 1, 1993
PLUS loans made before August 18, 1983
For a maximum of 3 years your loans can be deferred while serving full time in the US Public Health Service. To qualify you must submit a letter from an authorized official of the USPHS stating you will be serving full time for at least a year, your start and expected end dates.

Loans made before July 1, 1993
For a limit of 3 years while you are actively serving you can have your loans deferred for active duty status in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Corps (NOAA). Deferment will require a letter from an authorized official stating:
- You are on active duty status.
- The date you began active duty.
- The expected end date of active duty status.
Loans made before July 1, 1993
PLUS loans made before August 18, 1983
For a maximum of 3 years your loans can be deferred while serving full time in the Peace Corps. To qualify you must submit a letter from an authorized official of the Peace Corps stating you will be serving full time for at least a year, your start and expected end dates.

If you were previously employed or not and you are not working full time (30 hours per week) but are seeking full time employment you may qualify. To do so provide your lender with documentation of eligibility for unemployment benefits or registered with a public or private employment agency and made 6 attempts to obtain full time employment in the past 6 months. Deferment is limited based on your loan type from 2 to 3 years and must be recertified every 6 months.

Loans made before July 1, 1993
If you are pregnant or caring for your newborn or newly adopted child (mother or father) and in school you can qualify for up to 6 months of deferment. You must submit a letter stating you will not be in school, working more than 30 hrs a week for the next 3 months and that you were enrolled at least half time prior to deferment.
Required Form PLWM or en espanol PLWM-S
Loans made before July 1, 1993
Deferment intended for mothers who are entering the workforce. The program is limited to 12 months and requires you have a child who has not been enrolled in at least the 1st grade and currently employed full time but making no more than $1.00 above minimum wage. Documentation will include a pay stub, proof of child's age and statement regarding employment and qualifications.
Required Form PLWM or en espanol PLWM-S
This deferment is available only if you have had no outstanding balances on a FFELP loan as of the date you obtained a loan on or after July 1, 1993. The program is renewed each year and is limited to 3 total years. To qualify you must request the deferment with your lender and provide documentation that you meet at least one of the criteria:
- Granted HRD under either Federal Direct Loan Program or Federal Perkins Loan Program for the period you are requesting.
- Receiving payments or public assistance such as SSI, Food Stamps or Aid to Families with Dependent Children
- You are working full time and your income does not exceed minimum wage or equal or less than the poverty line for a family of two.
- You are working full time and your monthly payments on Federal loans exceed 20% of your monthly income.
- You are not working full time, your income does not exceed twice the amount of minimum wage or poverty line for a family of two and after deducting your monthly Federal loan payments the amount does not exceed the above 2 criteria.
- You are or will be serving as a volunteer in the Peace Corps.

In School, Fellowship or Rehabilitation Training
Loans issued after July 1, 1987 and before July 1, 1993
If the dependant or loan holder meets the In School, Fellowship or Rehabilitation Deferment criteria (see above) deferment will be granted. Deferment is limited to the anticipated graduation date of the dependant student or the date he or she drops below half time.
Required Form PLUS
Loans issued after July 1, 1993
Deferment of PLUS loans in this date range is not based on your dependants in school status but rather that of the loan holder (Parent in most cases). If the loan holder meets the In School Deferment, Fellowship or Rehabilitation criteria (see above) deferment will be granted. Deferment is limited to the anticipated graduation date of the loan holder or the date he or she drops below half time.
