Proposed HR 1134 Provides Relief for Physical Therapists
Are you going to school to be a Physical Therapist, but feel your options are limited to only the major cities once you graduate? On February 2007, Congress proposed a bill called HR 1134 which would help Physical Therapists with their school debt and possibly allow them to work in the area of their choice by including Physical Therapists in the National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program.
The NHSC Loan Repayment Program provides repayment relief for primary care physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, physician assistants and mental behavioral health professionals who work in an area with a shortage of health care professionals. Right now the maximum loan repayment is $25,000 each year with an initial contract of two years required.
HR 1134 is an important amendment because it would include Physical Therapists in the NHSC Loan Repayment Program, allowing them to seek jobs in rural or urban areas that are in need of Physical Therapists. This will create a new array of options for a Physical Therapists when choosing an area to work, and will also provide much needed Student Loan Debt relief. In addition, HR 1134 will help guarantee that areas that are under served, will have access to their services, as there is a current shortage for Physical Therapists in the country.
